A great gift to give someone special is the gift of good health and wellness for the upcoming new year. Healthy Options Philippines have put together five gift boxes full of healthy snacks. There's a theme for each box and for sure, one of that box fits the one you love.

The Advent Candle Box is a Christmas box for the health enthusiast.

The Christmas Angel Box is for that someone you know who is allergic to gluten.

The Star of Bethlehem Box is for the certified foodie that you know.

The Evergreen Fir Box is for the fitness junkie.

The St. Nicholas Box is a healthy food snack box that the whole family can enjoy.

The problem is the Healthy Options website isn't very informative. There's no description on what each box contains or if it's customizable. I can't even find the price of the gift boxes or is it priced depending on the items inside the box?

I tried contacting them via social media but I was directed to their website which did not help. And, there's no Healthy Options store near me. I have to travel to a different city which is two hours away. I would love to find out more before visiting the store or buying.

If there's a store near you, maybe you could help me out. Leave me your feedback in the comments below. Thank you!

Breakfast is my most favourite meal of the day. I can't be without breakfast. I get really grumpy. LOL! Buzzfeed posted an article last year about what your favourite breakfast food say about you.

Importantly, what does my favourite breakfast food say about me? Let's find out.

The breakfast foods featured in the article is a long one. I would love to eat all the food on their list. I like to mix up my breakfast meal once in awhile. For the past 3 or 4 years, it's Pan de sal and Coffee but let's stick to what is on the list.

But first, coffee!

It’s basically like a brother, a mother, a lover, to us all. If it’s your favorite part of breakfast, you tend to be the kind of person who instantly makes any room better just by walking into it. You improve any situation. You’re the alcohol of people.

No Pan De Sal. So, bagel.

If a bagel is your favorite, you’re basically like Beyoncé. That’s just a basic fact. No one’s ready for your jelly. Or cream cheese. Whatever.

Eggs Benedict

There was a time I got addicted to Eggs Benedict only because Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is right in our office building. Breakfast first before work.

Eggs Benedict are for anyone who loves it when a poached egg explodes all over their breakfast. If that describes you, listen up. Here’s a secret: Everyone wants to be you. Maybe they make it obvious, maybe they keep it on the down low, but you and your egg explosions are where it’s at.

French Toast

In Singapore, I got addicted to homemade French Toast. Weekend breakfast became a special time.

If this squishy egg bread is your favourite, it means one thing: You’re destined for greatness. French Toast eaters cannot be stopped so everyone should watch out for you and your maple syrup trail to the stars.

Sausage

Mama loves breakfast in Jollibee. We usually have of the same kind. Sausage for breakfast.

If sausage is your favorite, it means you’re a breakfast champion. And that’s a real thing. Breakfast champions are members of an elite class of breakfast eaters. Once their talent is spotted, they’re sent off to train and represent their country in the Olympics for breakfast eating.

Oatmeal

Being such a faker, meaning me, attempting to diet? LOL!

If oatmeal is your favourite, you deserve an award. Is it an award for eating a healthy breakfast? No! Of course not! It’s an award for just being awesome.

What does your favourite breakfast food say about you? Check out the article over at Buzzfeed.

Serves: 1 | Prep time: 2 minutes | Cooking time: 2 minutes | Cooking Skills: Simple

This is is possibly one of the most delicious and satisfying drinks, it is indulgent like a milkshake and gives you the coffee taste we all love without the acidic caffeine kick. I like to use Yannoh as its the most ‘coffee’ tasting however if you don’t want to have barley you can use dandelion as well.

Ingredients

260ml coconut milk or any other plant milk
3 tbsp yannoh (barley coffee or dandelion coffee)
4 tbsp coconut yoghurt
1 tbsp maca or lucuma

Instructions

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth

Aside from the acai, the star ingredient in this recipe is strawberries. Making the bowl bright, beautiful, and colorful, the strawberries pair perfectly with bananas and raspberries to yield a super smoothie bursting with flavor.

This recipe comes from House of Yumm, and unlike the other food formulas previously mentioned on our list, it calls for acai juice, rather than frozen acai or acai puree. You should be able to find this juice in the produce section of your grocery market, and trust us when we say it is well worth the trip.

The acai juice will combine beautifully with bananas, raspberry, and strawberries, resulting in the smoothie bowl of your dreams, and it will cool you down without filling you out.
Ingredients:
  • 6 ounces acai juice
  • 1 frozen banana
  • ½ cup frozen strawberries
  • ¼ cup raspberries
  • ¼ cup fresh strawberries
  • ¼ banana
  • 2 tablespoons granola

Directions: In a blender, or processor, add the acai juice, frozen banana, and frozen strawberries. Mix until fully combined, no lumps. Add more juice or more frozen strawberries to get the desired consistency.

Make sure to freeze your banana the night before. I always keep chunks of frozen banana in the freezer for these sorts of occasions.
If you want a deeper purple colour in the acai base, add a handful of frozen berries.
You want the base of the acai bowl to be thick and scoopable, not watery. Basically, you want to make sure to blend your base until it's smooth with as little liquid as possible.
Start with 1/3 cup and add a tiny bit as you need it. If you add too much, you can add a bit more frozen fruit and it will thicken up again.
I topped my bowl with cocoa nibs, unsweetened coconut flakes, granola, chopped macadamia nuts, raspberry and banana.
1 tablespoon acai powder
1 banana cut into chunks and frozen
1/3 cup coconut water

Topped with:

granola
fresh fruit (think blackberries, mango, banana, raspberries, strawberries)
unsweetened shredded coconut
nuts, seeds and other (think cocoa nibs, chopped macadamia nuts, chia seeds, buckwheat hearts)
In a blender, blend together frozen banana, acai powder and coconut water. Top with whatever toppings you want.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coconut milk (from the carton, not the can) or other vegan milk
  • 1/2 banana
  • 3/4 cup loosely packed kale, chopped
  • 1/2 heaping cup frozen mango
  • 1/2 heaping cup frozen pineapple
  • 1 acai packet
  • 1 heaping teaspoon maca powder
  • 1/2 cup + 1/4 cup granola, separated
  • 1/2 banana, thinly sliced
  • 3-4 strawberries, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup fresh mango, chopped (or other fresh fruit of your choice)
  • 1 tablespoon goji berries
  • 2 teaspoons cacao nibs
  • 1 teaspoon hemp hearts (shelled hemp seeds)

1. Choose the bowl that you are going to serve the acai bowl in, and place it in the freezer (optional, but this will keep the smoothie colder longer).

2. Prepare your toppings, such as the slicing the strawberries and the half banana. Set aside.

3. Combine the first 7 ingredients in your high-speed blender, and puree until smooth. You may need to scrape the sides a few times or stir it to break up clumps. This will be a thick smoothie.

4. Remove the bowl from the freezer and pour 1/4-cup granola into the bottom of the bowl. Gently pour the smoothie on top of the granola (If the smoothie has started to liquefy, you may want to place the blender canister in the freezer for about five minutes before pouring into the bowl). Top with the 1/2 cup of granola and sliced fruit. Sprinkle the goji berries, cacao nibs, and hemp seeds on top of the fruit and serve immediately.

Not everybody has the time to workout everyday. This quick workout is great for those days where you have to be at home or out of town.

This body toning workout is designed by Biggest Loser trainer, Dolvett Quince. He recommends doing the workout twice a week.

I wonder if he has a workout routine for those who are trying to get back into exercising. Looking at it, I think in whatever stage you are in terms of fitness, this routine is doable. For beginners, just go through the routine slowly at first. Don't expect to finish within 30 minutes. Or better yet, instead of 30 repetition, make 10-15 reps only.

At home, our trusted source of protein and fibre for breakfast is Quaker Oats.

I’m very surprised Quaker Instant Oats came out with Arroz Caldo version. I think it’s brilliant! Arroz Caldo is one of the country’s must try food. To have Quaker Oats coming out with instant version of Arroz Caldo, it removes the guess work and kitchen cooking time.

When I lived in Singapore and got sick, I was craving for Arroz Caldo. It’s a Filipino dish of chicken and ginger flavoured rice soup. Arroz Caldo is commonly known as porridge or rice congee.

Quaker Instant Oats Caldo nourishes with oats, brown rice, and wheat, carefully blended with rich beef flavour, carrots, and green onions. It has the four essentials: protein, fiber, magnesium and vitamin B1. To prepare, add 3/4 cup of hot water, stir well, wait for 2 minutes and serve. It's affordable at Php15.50 per 28g pack. The taste? It's so good!

I’ve been seeing all kinds of detox and slimming pictures on Instagram from various health and fitness accounts. I noticed that there’s a huge following in two or three Instagramers who promote these detox teas. That instantly got me curious. Does this mean this tea works?

Two weeks ago, I decided to chuck out the extra dollars and buy myself the SkinnyMint 14 Day tea starter pack.

The SkinnyMint starter pack includes the 14 Day Teatox Morning Boost and the 14 Day Teatox Night Cleanse. It’s scientifically developed herbal blend, 100% natural and blended poduct from Germany.

I believe detox helps in losing weight. A friend of mine who does yoga and teaches the practice believe in detox. And, there are various detox tips and recipes out in the worldwide web. So, I thought, why not give this teatox a try?

The Teatox Morning Boost may help to increase energy, burn fat and reduce appetite. The pack contains 14 tea bags for each morning that you drink tea before or during breakfast.

The Teatox Night Cleanse may help to reduce bloating, improve digestion and lose weight. The pack contains 7 teabags wherein you drink the tea every other night after your last meal. It has a gentle laxative effect, scientifically developed herbal blend, 100& natural product blended in Germany.

It’s been 3 days since I started the teatox. I did not experience appetite reduction. The laxative effect it gives is nothing out of the ordinary. The smell of the tea is not overpowering. I was never a tea drinker because I don’t really like the taste of them unless I add sweetener. For the SkinnyMint tea, I drink them without sweetener because it didn’t say in the instruction that I should. I find the taste bearable which, for me, was surprising. It’s not bitter or too herbal.

I wasn’t too crazy with the price but it does not carry a high end product price tag. It lies between high and low price. The packaging is pretty cute, high quality like their promise. The product was shipped from their warehouse in Singapore so shipping was pretty quick and it’s free in most countries. Get your starter pack, here.

“No Carbs” is the Mother of all diet fad in the world.

We have read and are told that carbohydrates causes weight gain.

Actually, any food we put inside our body combined with other food can cause changes to the body. This change can also be seen and felt in your moods, mood swings, energy highs and lows.

There are two kinds of carbohydrates: simple and complex.

Simple carbohydrates foods are: cereals, pastas, rice, breads, muffins and.. and cupcakes! Simple carbohydrates equal “sugar”.

Complex carbohydrates are starchy and fiber enriched foods. Example are oats, sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat pasta..and quinoa! They leave you feeling full all day long or until your next meal of the day. Now, you won’t find yourself over eating.

Don’t forget fruits and vegetables! You may think that fruits are too sweet and may contain too much sugar but it’s the kind of food that requires little time for the body to digest. Once it’s in the body, it’ll come out sooner than you think. Compare that to other foods!

You can juice fruits and vegetables for weight loss. That’s all the good stuff in liquid form. Much faster for the body to use!

What's your horrific “no-carb” diet stories? Share them in the comments below. Thank you!
