And Audrey Was Her Name

No. Not, until I know how to read. And not just to read for entertainment or because I have time to waste.

I love to read. Do I know how to read, properly?

When I was little, I remember how I loved to read. Filling up my borrower’s card at the school library is, to me, like a sport. Studying at an Elementary private school provided books but only very few copies were available. There weren’t many chances of reading in the school curriculum. There were literary passages or short stories within the textbook that the class would discuss but it ended there.

In high school, we read 3 major publications in Philippine history. In the 2nd year of high school, we read The Florante at Laura. It is the Philippines' answer to Romeo and Juliet. I don’t remember anything about the book, sad to say. I only remember feeling fearful of being called to class to discuss anything related to the book. It was in Filipino which I find difficult to understand. I blame the “English Only Policy” Elementary school where I studied and a “Bisaya Only” speaking household.

In my 3rd year, we read “Noli Me Tangere” by Jose Rizal. It is an important book but also published in Filipino at my time. The way it was taught in class, we had to create scripts and stage a dramatization of the book. FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. Forth year, we read the follow-up book which is “El Filibusterismo” by the same author. AGAIN, FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. You would think that a year of studying a text is enough. Oh, no. When I am not in the scene that day, my mind goes elsewhere.

Yes, I am to blame. I cannot remember the details of these books. I am not one to remember details at all. I plan to reread these last 2 books as soon as I find better copies and out of this reading slump.

I love to read. Do I know how to read, properly? I know I like to write. What I cannot say, I write down. Even my writing is as terrible as what’s in my head. Most of the time, it does not make sense. Have you realized that?

I decided to never fully edit my work as it reflects my true voice.

I don’t care about rewriting or editing my work because my grammar is just as bad. I decided to never fully edit my work as it reflects my true voice. If you don’t practice writing, you end up forgetting the skill. It’s been years since I can write in more than 150 words. They say writing prompts help. Find one topic to write about. Anything under the sun, right? Sometimes I find writing prompts a hassle to even think about where I stand in things and, so I stop. Is it a lack of motivation, then? Too many questions I have no care in finding answers.

Okay, the ramblings end here. Until my next post.

The recent disaster in the US, the California fire, is scary and sad. Too many families lost their homes and their personal belongings.

Disasters happen all the time in the Philippines. Mother nature unleashing her wrath. But the thing I fear the most, because I live in an old house, meaning the electricity wiring has not been updated, is FIRE. There are only a few things I will save.

Things or clothes are something I will not worry about. The important things would be:

  1. Land titles – because I don’t have a safety deposit box account with my bank, it is sitting here with us in the house
  2. Device – cellphone, tablet, e-reader, laptop, and chargers.
  3. Passport – because it will be such a bitch trying to replace documents
  4. Wallet – hopefully, with all my important government-issued IDs and bank cards
Since my Mother and I live together, this poses a different challenge. My Mother does not keep her things in one place. I end up looking for her stuff whenever she feels she lost them. There were instances where I asked her if a fire does happen and if she knows what things she must save. I won’t worry about her medical records because she has a personal relationship with her internist. He would have a record of her medical history. I would save her medicines though because she does buy them in bulk. It will get expensive when replacing it.

If you have been to our house, you will notice it is between two buildings. The gate is close to one side of the building. An earthquake is also something we have thought about.

In the Philippines, floods happen almost every year, multiple times. The things we thought have value will amount to nothing when your family's lives are on the line. The most important thing is to heed warnings and act on them as early as possible. This way damages are not that costly and permanent.

I am slowly getting back to hoarding books again. Books should always be a good thing but not when you buy one just to get a new one with zero regard to storyline or costs. In my case, I keep buying books on sale only to be disappointed later on. There's a reason that some books cost less. I also refuse to buy hyped books because it's not fair to well-written books that are not recommended on social media often enough.

I have also wanted to get a new Kindle. The one that was handed down to me was lost somewhere. Trust Shopee, an online shopping platform, to lure you into buying things that you don't actually really need but is a great platform for all the wants in the world. I decided to get the Kindle 2022 e-Reader 11th Edition because of its price tag. It was also sold by a reputable online store and I was also able to score some discount. The Kindle is so tiny! It is the size of a pocketbook! Good thing you can adjust the text size of the ebook. Book recommendation anyone? Comment below.

I am also trying to get back to writing book reviews. I also want to be able to write about books well like how it was taught in schools. To be honest, there was little chance to write book reviews in Highschool although the task was to read passages and write about them. But, not about books. Books are such a luxury!

I want to learn, write, and be able to:

  • the prose fiction analysis
  • analyze how the author uses literary elements and techniques to develop a complex characterization
  • the literary argument question
  • select a work of fiction in which a character responds to a hierarchy in a significant way
  • analyze the character’s response to the hierarchy and how that response contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole, and
  • write a well-written response based on that analysis
  • understanding of the literary elements and techniques associated with prose fiction
  • to demonstrate choice, comprehension, and ability to develop and support a claim
..and more importantly, to NOT just write about the summary of the story!

So I asked Chat GPT to recommend me a book with a 40-year-old something single female character in it. And, this is the book that was recommended to me.

The first time I requested a recommendation, it gave me a different book and was "Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine" which is a novel by Gail Honeyman. Then it recommended me other books every time with slight changes to the request phrase, "with" and then "about". I have to say, Chat GPT has excellent taste in books because of all the three that it recommended, I've heard excellent things about them. I won't be mad if I end up buying these books and reading them.
  • Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
Goodreads Choice Award - Nominee for Best Fiction (2017)
    4.25 Stars Rating
  • The Last Letter From Your Lover
    3.99 Stars Rating from Goodreads
  • Where'd You Go, Bernadette
Goodreads Choice Award - Nominee for Best Humor (2012)
    3.88 Stars Rating
I highly recommend Chat GPT to make such a request if you find yourself out of ideas for books to read.

Advanced Placement, or AP, courses are courses offered in US and Canadian high schools that allow them to study subjects at a college level and in turn, will enable them to earn college advance credits.

One of the AP subjects offered in high school is AP Literature and Composition. In this course, you read fiction, poetry, and dramatic plays. You will learn to evaluate and analyze and write essays on your analysis. By the end of the course, you will discover close reading, interpret the meaning of the text, learn the author's techniques and the effects, and then write an essay on your interpretation and analysis.

Here are common books that are frequently cited in AP Literature exams from 1970 to 2014, PDF link here. The source is not mine and was generated online from one of the US public schools offering the course. The books listed are not complete and some schools also recommend books that are not on the list. Student bloggers who have undergone the study of AP Literature have recommended reading as much literature as you can. Before the end of the school year, the students will be tested and the most common part of the test is the free open-ended question, a prompt, where you will write in paragraphs to present your ideas.

In the Philippines, we don't have AP courses. In fact, throughout high school, the reading of foreign literature was never part of the curriculum. The only books we tackle are the books written by Filipino authors and there aren't that many Filipino classic writers. The only books we've ever read in high school are Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and Florante at Laura. Books are still considered a luxury to be had in the Philippines.

So, I've tried through the list presented by one US school and found out how many of the books there I have, started reading, heard about it, and want to read them.

Read books:

  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
  • Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
  • Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift

Books started but did not finish:

  • The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
  • Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Books I'm tempted to get started:

  • Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
  • Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevski
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
  • The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
  • Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
  • A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen
  • A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

There are movie adaptations of some of the books that are on my list. But, never miss out on reading the original piece if you ever have the chance.

Watch these bloggers and I hope it will inspire you to read classic literature.

I love watching moving vlogs and house renovation. Imagine my excitement when a big celebrity from the Philippines decided to share the renovation of her 1-bedroom condominium and then it turns out to be simple and so attainable.

Based on the renovation video, Bela Padilla value books, her upright grand piano and beautiful things, too, but only keeps what she uses. Everything about her things screams expensive, sure, but she does not hoard. I love a celebrity that does not value things like having a celebrity closet, a room full of expensive and luxury clothes and accessories. I would love to own and live in space like hers.

I wish they also redid the kitchen and bathroom or at least shown it on the video. But, they didn't. So, I can only imagine how it looks like, like any other condo kitchen and bathroom built in the Philippines. If you are curious, here's the video from the designer/contractor.

I came across a video on the @Roommy_Roomtour Youtube channel and fell in love with the interior with eight_field house interior. The kitchen is to die for but the office space is the most romantic space in the house.

I imagine the house is really like a flat or condo because the owners are Japanese and Japanese housing are like that. But what they did to their space, it's really inspiring.

The wood material makes the interior earthy and outdoorsy. Living in a condo flat doesn't have to feel like living in a box or in a hospital with an interior that is mostly white. Watch the full video of the house tour here.

What do you think? It's brilliant, creative and romantic. Isn't it?

New year, new you but I still refuse to make a bucket list for 2023. Getting a new year means a new year to lead a better life than we did last year. COVID-19 restrictions may not be strict this year but inflation hits an all-time high. Prices for commodities have increased considerably and it's now painful to enjoy the simple enjoys. What's a girl to do? Find new avenues that will not cost a fortune.

READING

There are sites you can download free ebooks. My mother subscribes to these fictional and not so well written stories but still engaging like your regular telenovela on TV. There are second-hand bookstores to get really affordable books or make a book exchange with anyone who, like you, is also a bookworm.

BLOGGING

I've parked blogging for years and somehow deleted a few more on some other platforms. But, I have always started blogging as a way to create and just write away random thoughts to escape realities sometimes, and now I am back. I've rekindled the love to write on anything that catches my attention and just throw in my thoughts and ideas on the subject.

RECREATIONAL HOBBIES

I've collected a few items to start and enrich my hobbies. Unfortunately, they have been left unused and neglected. That time is no more. If you are reading this, look around your home and look for unfinished projects. Great way to spend time creatively and not have to spend any extras, or I hope.

Leading a mindful lifestyle is not a surefire way to have a happy life. There's no formula. I haven't really read the Happiness book at all. But, if there are little things that spark joy, yes, including getting rid of useless things at home, then do that.

I've always wanted to learn how to bake bread. Since I took that Baking and Pastries class from TESDA and learned how to make Pandesal, I've been thinking about making Sourdough. But, I never got around it.

Browsing through Youtube and watching Sourdough baking How-to videos, while they do make it look easy, showing the technical processes makes it very intimidating to make.

First, what is a starter? A starter is a live fermented culture of fresh flour and water. Tasty's Youtube channel shared a video on how to make one and what could go wrong in making it.

From what I gather, it takes 7 days to make a starter. 7 days! Patience is a virtue.

Now, for the ingredients. Basically, not just any flour will do when making a starter. I searched through Healthy Options PH for what flours they have. Here are the best ones:

1. Bob's Red Mill Unbleached Artisan Bread Flour 2.27KG for Php510.00
2. Bob's Red Mill Organic Stone Ground Dark Rye Flour 567g for Php285.00

For the tools, here's what I found in SHOPEE:

1. Chef's Classics Basics Nylon Spatula
2. Mason Ball Jars (2pcs) 32 oz for Php570.00

Make the starter when you are ready to start baking Sourdough. For newbies like me, let's ready ourselves that we might not get it right the first time. Make Youtube our best friend. We are saved from a lot of trials and errors by bakers who shared their experiences and expertise.

Age: 40
Gender: Female
Height: 155 cm
Weight: 60 kg
Activity: Sedentary: little or no exercise

Exercise: 15-30 minutes of elevated heart rate activity.
Intense exercise: 45-120 minutes of elevated heart rate activity.
Very intense exercise: 2+ hours of elevated heart rate activity.

Maintain weight: 1,443 - 100% Calories/day

The number of Calories required to maintain your weight seems low. Please consult with a doctor when considering weight loss. Alternatively, increase your activity/exercise level rather than decrease Calorie intake in order to lose some weight.

In the past, I find being under daily calorie intake works fast. It does not mean dieting, or not eating at all. Eat healthily, count calories if you can, and then just increase your physical exercise. The exercises help lose calories and that makes you go under your daily requirement. It's not just any exercise, it has to be an "elevated heart rate" kind of exercise. Running, jump rope, biking!

It is basically back to normal for most businesses. Lucky for those who survived the pandemic. And after all of that, we find that the workforce finds the work-from-home setup convenient.

This opens up a problem with being inactive and living a sedentary lifestyle. We lose that daily dose of exercise that we get from walking to and from work office. While this is true, it is also not impossible to find a solution.

We can also have the convenience of working out from home without the expensive gym membership. What then do we do if we live in a studio condo or small apartment? Here are affordable and portable workout pieces of equipment that you can buy at Shopee Philippines:

  1. Spin Bike Indoor Stationary Bike
  2. ABS Fitness Glider
  3. skylinker Six Pack Fitness Equipment
Here are 5 fitness equipment that you can slide and hide
under your bed or storage closet:

  1. Hula Hoop
  2. Resistance Bands
  3. Yoga Mat
  4. Kettlebell
  5. Jump Rope
But, let's not get ahead of ourselves. We don't need all of this fancy and affordable workout equipment. It does not mean that if we can afford it, we buy it. Small items keep piling up and will just clutter your small space. For women or yogists, yoga matt and yoga phone apps will do. For men, a pull-up bar that you can hang on your door is enough, too.

No matter the size of your workout space, don't let workout equipment expense or the lack thereof stop you from having an effective workout. Use your mobile phone's step counter, too. It's the rage!

Thank God for online shopping!

When Youtube erupted and gave birth to famous Youtubers who became influencers, the most subscribed channel back then was the beauty guru channel. After years of watching them, and wasting money on makeup, I realized what the content does to my well-being. It is the video version of the magazine where you can say," Don't buy it as it will only make you feel ugly."? And yes, poor. Beauty gurus did that for me. So, I stopped watching them.

Here are the 8 Youtube channels I wish my younger self had growing up:

Study Quill

This channel is so fun to watch. I highly recommend it.
https://www.youtube.com/@studyquill

Study To Success

Study tips, productivity, and stationery channel
https://www.youtube.com/@StudyToSuccess

Peruse Project

Talks about books and new releases and lists top books in any genre.
https://www.youtube.com/@PeruseProject/

There were so many times that Regan made me buy books just because she recommended them so well. Also, her bookshelf and book collection is envy-worthy!

Abbey Sy

Vlogger, creative, and book author extraordinaire. Everything about what she does is very inspiring!
https://www.youtube.com/@AbbeySy

Alyanna Ross

Student vlogger. Vlogging her University life in Ateneo, working part-time as a graphic designer.
https://www.youtube.com/@alyannaross/

She just graduated this year Cum Laude and now navigating life as an adult. She is goals!

Ahnyeongs

Student vlogger, you would think she is Korean but she is not.
https://www.youtube.com/@ahnyeongs/

She started out vlogging in High school and now she is a University student. Exciting!

Ways To Study

This channel was created to give tips on studying to show the community how the content creator studies, and her routines in the hopes of motivating her subscribers to do the same.

Do you think you still have the time? Trust me, you don't. Don't waste your youth on youthful things and experiences. Or at least, those that are sold by your generation, mine are the millennials.

I am now 40 and here is a list of what I wish I knew and done when I started working after graduation. I should've known back then to invest my salary as early as possible.

1. Memorial Plan and Memorial Lot
Cosmopolitan Funeral Package and Manila Memorial Garden
The monthly premium is not expensive and can be paid in full in 5 years. Get this out of the way as soon as possible.

2. Real Estate
It doesn't matter whether you know or don't know where you will end up in the next 5 years, but one thing you must do is save up for that downpayment for a house. A house is considered THE BIG ONE purchase for all adults. It is not your wedding expense. So, as early as your 20s, save up for a home you can call your own.

3. Insurance
Start investing in a life and health plan as early as you can. It doesn't have to be the most expensive plan because you can always upgrade in the future once your salary increases and your career progresses.

4. Car
This is going to be controversial. It always depends on where you work and live. If the commute proves to be exhausting, some would say, buy a car. I would not call it an investment because cars devalue as they age but the energy you put yourself into on a daily basis to function at your best at work is the investment. If one day, you do end up buying a property located in a suburb because the housing costs less, at least by that time you have already fully paid your mortgage on the car.

5. Stock and saving options
Now is such a great time to invest. When the economy is down, stocks cost less. There are so many investments and saving options offered these past few years compared to when I started out adulting. For example, the PAGIBIG Modified Savings and PAGIBIG Regular Savings programs. And this example is just the easiest and most basic for just about anyone who is a member of PAGIBIG can do.

This is not the most exhaustive list out here on the web. Just a short idea of what you could work on. Do your research. Plan it out and most importantly, focus on the goal.

The pandemic that brought about a change in how students learn, especially in the Philippines, proved to be challenging. But those who are homeschooled, are quite used to the setup. Online school or studying from homemade you realize how the home atmosphere plays an important role in learning.

Now, I've scoured the internet and poured more than enough time spent just watching videos that kids from all parts of the world have shared about how they are adapting to the new change. And man, it was inspiring and also cute to watch.

The first thing they did was to create a study space. In the Philippines, not all parents are ready for it. But, thanks to shopping platforms that offer a wide variety of affordable equipment, it's not too, too, impossible.

Choose the best but not the most expensive equipment

Except of course, if you study programming or require the use of heavy apps for school. But, if you only use it for research, email, Zoom classes, and data entry, then an Intel i5 laptop will do. Schools allow the use of mobile phones and tablets when accessing learning platforms and modules. But, the best equipment can either be a laptop or a desktop.

1. Dell Inspiron Desktop Intel Core i3 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Windows 11
As of posting is below Php42,000.00

2. Lenovo Ideapad 3 14.0" FHD Intel Core i5-10210U 8GB RAM 512GB SSD
As of posting is below Php32,000.00.

Processor: i5-10210U
Speed: 1.6GHz
RAM: 8GB expandable to 12GB
Solid State Drive: 512GB
Operating System: Windows 11

It's all about the aesthetic.

Creating a good workspace is essential to learning and productivity. These items are all sold on Shopee and prices can vary depending on the store's sales promotion. The study space does not need to be a room if you don't have the extra space. It could simply be that less traffic corner in your house. Then, go for a minimal desk setup.

Lifetime Folding Chair and Folding Study Table

Need not be expensive.

Choosing wireless accessories will remove wire management hassle and makes the workspace a whole lot cleaner. A clean workspace lets you focus on the task at hand. These accessories go as low as Php 300.00.

  1. A4Tech Power-Saving Wireless Keyboard And Mouse Combo Kit - White
  2. Baseus Wireless Bluetooth Headphone - White
  3. Jaguar Power Strip with 3 sockets and 3 USB outlets
Even though the schools are back to face-to-face classes, having a learning space that we feel safe, inspired, and motivated to come home to can produce rewards for your future and the remaining years of your academic performance.

It's been years since I've been out of work. It is time to get back to the swing of things. The trend has caught up because of the pandemic and everyone is getting the hang of the work-from-home setup.

Recently, I have been advised that one day someone will be better at the skills and industry I was in. I cannot deny that fact. After studying the freelancing industry, I conclude that the ones who have the IT skillset tend to do well. It means better pay and a longer work contract offer.

For years I have always wanted to study Google Analytics only to find out that it will be phased out and a new Google Analytics will take place. Things like this make IT a highly pressured work industry because it innovates so much faster than someone like me can keep up. But, it is not impossible.

Upskilling is the only way to make oneself relevant in any industry. It is a way to broaden your career horizon and find opportunities to grow.

There are so many platforms that offer courses to help with self-study. I have courses parked on SkillShare and LinkedIn Learning. The motivation to get started is another story. There is no other way around it but to just get on with it. One step at a time. One video lesson at a time until you get it done.

But my interest is varied. I have Adobe Creative Suite courses saved, Bookkeeping, Medical Transcription, and Data Analysis. What am I going to be good at?

Ever wonder what it feels like to live in a country that experiences the four seasons? I do. I was born and raised in Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and the countries that I've been to have only been around Southeast Asia, too. The coldest I've ever experienced in a place would be in Baguio City, Philippines.

Here are a few walking tours uploaded on Youtube that would give us a glimpse of what it is like for other countries during the winter season.

Walking Tour around a snowy Seoul, South Korea

First snowfall in Calgary, AB Canada

Snowfall in Moscow, Russia a walk through the city, and Christmas lights

Snowy New York City

Snowy winter walk from southern Helsinki to the city center

What do you think of these walking tours that are uploaded on Youtube? I think these are great resources for those who can or are not able to travel. These videos give us a glimpse of what it would be like in these places. For someone like me, who grew up in a tropical country, it probably will feel like a nightmare having to endure the crazy months of winter. But, who knows?

Here's an oven version type of the air fryer from Kyowa.

Today was uneventful like any other days. I had to visit the lawyers office for an advice and then went on a few errands. It's been a while since I've visited Watsons store and I have a few items on my want list.

On today's cart:
1. fRESH 98 Tomato Glass Skin Bye Wrinkles Eye Serum Gel - Php114.50
2. Milcu Roll-On Deodorant Unscented - Php76.00
3. Vitamins and Medicines
4. glam WORKS Permanent Hair Dye Color in Dark Caramel Brown - Php50.00
5. DR. SENSITIVE Underarm Whitening Serum - Php 49.00

I'm excited to use the eye serum. I haven't tried the underarm serum. I love that it comes in a trial packet.

The tomato infused serum gel comes with a cool metal roll-on applicator that gently glides onto the skin. It said to brighten the under eye and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines. This is a paraben, alcohol free and cruelty free product.

The Dr. Sensitive serum combines the potency of Arbutin and Vitamin C to visibly lighten the underarm and other dark areas like elbows, knees and the bikini area.

6. BodyXpert Underarm Lightening Cream - Php99.00
7. Pretty Secret Color Me Softly Tinted Lip Balm - Php79.00
8. Pretty Secret Tint Up and glow up 2-in-1 Lip & Cheek Tint - Php89.00
9. OMG French Manicure - Php36.00
10. Kojiesan skin lightening soap - Php50.00
11. Watsons Double HA Mask - 3 for Php110.00
12. Beauty Buffet Everyday Mask - 3 for Php110.00

I'm excited to try the Pretty Secret hippies because they seem to have good reviews and also inexpensive. I needed to stock up on moisturizing face masks, too.

Have you tried these products before? Let me know your feedback in the comments section.
